Become a Miracle Friend

Some of the most meaningful moments at egm don’t happen in a program or a classroom.
They happen when someone realizes, “I’m not alone.”
That’s why we’re excited to share a volunteer opportunity facilitated by an organization we respect: Miracle Friends is a phone-based friendship program run by Miracle Messages, a trusted partner and expert in relationship-centered support for people experiencing homelessness.
What are miracle friends?
Miracle Friends matches individuals experiencing homelessness with volunteers for weekly calls and texts—simple, consistent check-ins that help build connection over time.
It’s:
- 100% virtual (you can volunteer from anywhere)
- about 30 minutes per week
- supported with training + kickoff orientation and an optional volunteer community
- designed so you can connect without sharing your personal phone number (they provide a Google Voice or Dialpad number)
And it’s important to say this clearly: you show up as a friend—not a caseworker.
Why egm is sharing this
If you’ve been through Poverty 101, you already know this: poverty and homelessness are deeply relational realities. Poverty 101 was created to help our community learn, unlearn, and show up with more understanding—and more humility.
Miracle Friends is a natural next step because it gives you a way to practice what you’ve learned:
- slowing down
- listening well
- being consistent
- building trust over time
Not to “fix” someone—but to be present.
What volunteering can look like
As a Miracle Friends volunteer, you’ll generally:
- connect by phone call and/or text once a week
- log check-ins in a volunteer dashboard
- join optional group check-ins for support
- lean on the Miracle Messages team and community as you learn
If you’ve ever thought, “I want to help, but I’m not sure what to do,” this is one clear, practical option.
Why we trust miracle messages
egm is partnering with Miracle Messages because they’ve built thoughtful, proven pathways for relational connection—grounded in dignity and consistency.
Their founder, Kevin F. Adler, also wrote When We Walk By—one of the books we recommend most often for anyone who wants to better understand homelessness and our shared role in responding with humanity.
