Poverty 101

The egm Way

When our staff gathered several years ago to discuss ways we can help more people, our conversation led to a shocking realization. Even our staff – those of us who work closest with people trapped in poverty – had more to learn.

The more we talked, the more we saw that before we could do more, we needed to know more. That’s when Poverty 101 was created.

Created by egm to transform the community, Poverty 101 is an insightful and interactive workshop equipping participants to better love and serve through relational poverty alleviation.

Bring Poverty 101 to Your Community

egm trainings intentionally foster networking and collaboration between partners including faith communities, non-profits, municipalities, businesses, and community groups.

Poverty 101 isn’t just for our staff — it’s for anyone who wants to make a real difference in Everett.

Whether you lead a congregation or a company, you can bring this transformative workshop directly to your people.

For Churches

Your church already has a heart for the community. Poverty 101 gives your congregation the knowledge and tools to turn that compassion into meaningful, lasting impact. We’ll come to you — equipping your members to engage with their neighbors in poverty with dignity, wisdom, and genuine relationship.

For Businesses

Corporate social responsibility goes deeper than a donation. When your team understands the real dynamics of poverty, your company’s community engagement becomes more effective — and more human. Poverty 101 is a powerful professional development experience that changes how your employees see and serve Everett.

While we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for community service purposes, our volunteer program is not designed to accommodate mandated/elected community service requirements. We offer 6 hours of volunteer training almost every month, however we cannot guarantee available volunteer opportunities (specifically timeliness) in accordance with community service requirements.

YES! It is intended for everyone interested in doing relational poverty alleviation, improving their corresponding skills and/or training others in their organizations. Professionals and novices all benefit from this innovative workshop.

NO! Our goal was to develop workshops that are open and welcoming to persons of faith and those without faith. Workshops where attendees can discuss their faith and how it impacts their actions comfortably. Yet, attendees who are not persons of faith will feel welcome and benefit from participating in the workshops.

EGM’s poverty training targets both our heads and our hearts! Using years of experience and learning walking alongside those experiencing material poverty, the presenters facilitate a journey that focuses on relational poverty alleviation.

  • You will be challenged to consider both the barriers you face as well as the barriers faced by those experiencing poverty along this journey.
  • You will be encouraged to pursue effective relational poverty alleviation strategies that remove personal and systemic barriers to change.

EGM trainings intentionally provide a space where networking and collaboration between unlikely partners such as faith communities, non-profits, municipalities, businesses, and neighborhoods is fostered and encouraged.

Poverty 101 & 201 are critical blocks to building cross-sector partnerships that result in a resilient, thriving community.
